Muscat: A Major Milestone for Sohar Port’s LNG Hub
Sohar Port and Freezone have officially begun deepening the navigation channel for the $1.6 billion Marsa LNG Project, a strategic move positioning the port as a regional leader in clean marine fuel supply.
The project involves dredging 4 million cubic meters of material to create a dedicated navigation channel and berth. Once complete, this infrastructure will support the Middle East’s first LNG bunkering hub, reinforcing Oman’s commitment to sustainable maritime transport and carbon footprint reduction.
Advancing Oman’s Clean Energy Vision
Set for completion by September 2025, the Marsa LNG project will play a pivotal role in Oman’s energy transition. The initiative supports the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) emission reduction goals, providing ships with a low-emission alternative fuel at competitive prices.
Key Features of the Marsa LNG Project:
- 1 million metric tons of LNG will be produced annually.
- The facility will be powered by a 300 MW solar photovoltaic plant, further reducing emissions.
- Enhances Oman’s green shipping infrastructure, attracting global trade partners.
