Nizwa, Oman – The Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah has launched a series of historical restoration projects to preserve its cultural heritage, attract investments, and promote sustainable tourism. With a total investment exceeding OMR 3.78 million, these initiatives aim to transform the region into a leading cultural and economic hub.
A Vision for Economic Growth Through Heritage
Sheikh Hilal Said Al Hajri, Governor of Al Dakhiliyah, emphasized that preserving archaeological landmarks is key to strengthening Oman’s national identity. Additionally, integrating the local community into these projects will create new job opportunities and support the knowledge economy.
“The governorate is committed to maintaining the historical integrity of its sites while ensuring their long-term sustainability,” he stated. He also noted that these efforts align with Oman’s national development plans, particularly in enhancing tourism infrastructure and promoting cultural heritage.
Significant Rise in Heritage Tourism
The restoration and development efforts have significantly increased visitor numbers. In 2023, approximately 312,200 tourists explored the castles and forts of Al Dakhiliyah. By 2024, this figure had surged to over 415,000, marking a 33% growth rate.
Major Projects Underway
Several key projects are currently in progress, including:
- Bahla Souq Rehabilitation – Reviving an iconic marketplace with improved facilities.
- Jabreen and Basya Entrances Development – Currently at 5% completion, aiming to enhance access to Jabreen Fort.
- Jabreen Entrance Development – Expanding parking facilities to accommodate more visitors.
Additionally, the governorate is actively participating in urban renewal initiatives in Al Hamra, notably through the Old Al Hamra Neighborhood Renewal Project. This initiative blends historical architecture with modern infrastructure, setting a precedent for sustainable urban development.
Misfat Al Abriyeen: A Model for Sustainable Tourism
The Misfat Al Abriyeen Development Project is set to enhance visitor experience with:
- A glass bridge connecting key areas.
- A safe pedestrian walkway with heritage-inspired lighting.
- Paved paths that preserve the authentic charm of the neighborhood.
Ongoing Projects in Al-Aqar
- Al-Aqar Neighborhood Paving – 20% complete, improving accessibility.
- Al-Aqar Wall Restoration – 60% complete, preserving historical structures.
These projects are designed to enhance the visitor experience, attract tourism investment, and reinforce Oman’s position as a global heritage destination.
