As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, markets in Oman are witnessing a surge in purchasing activity. With an anticipated increase in demand for essential food supplies, including fruits, vegetables, and other staple commodities, Oman’s retail sector is actively preparing to meet the needs of its population.

Increased Demand for Fresh Produce and Food Items

In particular, the demand for fruits and vegetables is expected to soar during Ramadan. To ensure the availability and affordability of food items throughout the month, multiple stakeholders are working collaboratively to maintain market stability. Othman bin Ali al Hatali, Director of Operations at the Central Fruits and Vegetables Market (Silal), emphasized the comprehensive preparations undertaken to ensure a steady supply of both local and imported produce.

From February 10 to 17, 2025, a total of 236 trucks delivered approximately 5,970 tons of imported fruits and vegetables, along with 3,160 tons of local agricultural products. These efforts are designed to guarantee that the market can meet the rising demand expected during Ramadan.

Optimized Logistics and Delivery Hours

To streamline operations and ensure a smooth supply chain, the Central Fruits and Vegetables Market has established specific delivery hours. Trucks carrying wholesale goods will be received from 4 am to 2 pm, while local agricultural products will be accepted in two shifts: from 4 am to 1 pm and from 5 pm to 11 pm. These optimized hours will remain in effect throughout the week, excluding Fridays, to enhance efficiency and minimize disruptions.

Ensuring Food Safety and Hygiene Standards

Health and safety remain top priorities in Oman’s Ramadan preparations. Silal’s team rigorously monitors hygiene standards, working closely with the Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources to ensure a safe and stable market environment. As part of these measures, over 180 product samples have already been tested to guarantee the quality of produce for consumers.

Consumer Protection and Price Monitoring Efforts

To ensure a stable market during Ramadan, the Directorate General of Consumer Protection Authority (CPA) in Dhofar Governorate is intensifying efforts to monitor commodity prices and control expired goods. The CPA is conducting market surveys to identify and prevent misleading promotional offers, ensuring fair pricing during this high-demand period.

The Dhofar Municipality’s Health Control Department has also launched inspection campaigns aimed at ensuring food establishments comply with health regulations. These campaigns focus on sectors with high consumer demand, such as meat sales, bakeries, and restaurants, to ensure safe and healthy food options are available to consumers.

Sustaining Meat and Fish Supplies

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources has reassured the public that there will be a steady supply of live meat and fish throughout Ramadan, with an emphasis on maintaining price stability. Since February 1, Oman has imported 169,200 heads of live livestock, including cows, sheep, and goats. Additionally, fish will remain available in the markets, even during adverse weather conditions.

Combating Price Inflation and Supporting Low-Income Families

The CPA is also taking proactive steps to prevent price manipulation and monitor food prices across both small and large shopping centers. Special attention will be given to preventing deceptive advertising, particularly regarding Ramadan promotions. Awareness campaigns are being conducted to protect consumers from misleading offers and ensure transparency in pricing.

In collaboration with private entities, the CPA has launched the ‘Ramadan Basket’ initiative to support low-income families. This initiative provides discounted food baskets, helping to ease the financial burden on families during this sacred month. The CPA is committed to ensuring that prices remain fair and accessible to all consumers, regardless of income level.

Conclusion: A Collaborative Effort for a Smooth Ramadan

With a comprehensive strategy involving stakeholders across multiple sectors, Oman is well-positioned to manage the anticipated surge in demand during Ramadan. By focusing on supply chain efficiency, food safety, consumer protection, and price stability, the country aims to ensure that all citizens can access the food they need during this important month, without facing inflated prices or market disruptions.
